Ideal Power (IPWR), a leading developer of next-generation semiconductor technology, announced a major step forward in the commercialization of its patented B-TRAN\u00ae power switch with a new order from a global Tier 1 automotive supplier. This supplier provides key electronic systems, including powertrain and safety technologies, to several top 10 global automotive OEMs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The order includes a range of Ideal Power\u2019s innovative products: packaged B-TRAN\u00ae devices, SymCool\u00ae power modules, solid-state circuit breaker reference design boards, and driver solutions. These will be evaluated for integration into a cutting-edge solid-state electric vehicle (EV) contactor design. Notably, the Tier 1 supplier also requested budgetary quotes for millions of SymCool\u00ae modules, indicating early-stage planning for large-scale deployment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

EV contactors are critical safety components that disconnect the vehicle\u2019s battery during faults, crashes, or servicing. Current EVs typically use between five and eight contactors to isolate the battery from various subsystems, including the motor drive, HVAC, and charging systems. Ideal Power\u2019s B-TRAN\u00ae-based contactors offer a superior alternative to electromechanical solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Unlike traditional contactors, B-TRAN\u00ae solid-state contactors operate significantly faster\u2014reducing arcing and increasing safety. They are more reliable, require less maintenance, and offer programmable features such as current limiting and built-in diagnostics. Thanks to the device\u2019s unique bidirectional architecture, B-TRAN\u00ae also cuts the number of switches needed in half, reduces conduction losses, and lowers overall system cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ideal Power is currently working with three global automakers, including Stellantis, and five Tier 1 automotive suppliers. The company believes the EV and hybrid vehicle industries are poised to adopt solid-state contactors at scale within the next five years, driven by the performance and efficiency benefits of B-TRAN\u00ae.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
