Multi-generational AWS collaboration will target custom AI silicon and 1.6T optical connectivity, while giving Amazon warrants to acquire up to 25 million Qualcomm shares
Qualcomm Technologies (QCOM) shares jumped 9.5% after the semiconductor company announced a multi-generational collaboration with Amazon (AMZN) aimed at expanding both companies’ presence in artificial intelligence data center infrastructure.
Under the agreement, Qualcomm will work with Amazon Web Services to develop customized, energy-efficient silicon for large-scale AI workloads. The companies will also collaborate on high-speed optical connectivity technology capable of supporting speeds of up to 1.6T, addressing the rapidly increasing bandwidth requirements of AI data centers.
The partnership represents a significant expansion opportunity for Qualcomm as hyperscale cloud providers invest heavily in specialized infrastructure for increasingly demanding generative AI and inference workloads.
“As AI demand accelerates, data center infrastructure will require advances in both computing and connectivity to deliver greater performance with more efficiency,” Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon said.
The companies will leverage Qualcomm’s SerDes and optical digital signal processing technologies to improve data movement between processors, accelerators and other components within large AI clusters. Network bandwidth and power consumption have become increasingly important bottlenecks as AI systems scale.
Qualcomm will also expand its own use of AWS AI infrastructure, including Amazon Bedrock, to improve semiconductor design workflows and engineering productivity.
Adding another dimension to the partnership, Qualcomm will issue Amazon a warrant to purchase up to 25 million QCOM shares. The potential equity position further aligns Amazon with Qualcomm as the chipmaker expands beyond its traditional mobile business and pursues the rapidly growing AI infrastructure market.
