Revenue growth and AI advancements position AMD for a promising second half of the year

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has reported impressive financial results for the second quarter of 2024, with notable revenue and earnings growth. The company announced a revenue of $5.8 billion, a gross margin of 49%, operating income of $269 million, net income of $265 million, and diluted earnings per share (EPS) of $0.16. On a non-GAAP basis, the gross margin was 53%, operating income was $1.3 billion, net income was $1.1 billion, and diluted EPS was $0.69.

AMD’s performance in Q2 2024 was significantly bolstered by the success of its Data Center segment, which achieved record revenue of $2.8 billion, marking a 115% year-over-year increase. This surge was primarily driven by a substantial ramp-up in AMD Instinct™ GPU shipments and robust sales of 4th Gen AMD EPYC™ CPUs. The Client segment also showed strong performance with a revenue of $1.5 billion, up 49% year-over-year, driven by the popularity of AMD Ryzen™ processors.

Strategic AI Investments and Market Expansion

Dr. Lisa Su, AMD’s Chair and CEO, emphasized the company’s strategic positioning and its focus on AI advancements. “Our AI business continued accelerating and we are well-positioned to deliver strong revenue growth in the second half of the year led by demand for Instinct, EPYC, and Ryzen processors,” she stated. Dr. Su highlighted the growing demand for compute power across various markets driven by rapid advancements in generative AI, which is creating significant growth opportunities for AMD.

Jean Hu, AMD’s EVP, CFO, and Treasurer, highlighted the company’s strong execution and financial performance. “AMD executed well in the second quarter, with revenue above the midpoint of our guidance driven by strong growth in the Data Center and Client segments. In addition, we expanded gross margin and delivered solid earnings growth, while increasing our strategic AI investments to build the foundation for future growth,” Hu said.

Segment Performance

Data Center Segment: The standout performer, the Data Center segment, achieved record revenue of $2.8 billion, a 115% increase year-over-year and a 21% increase sequentially. This growth was driven by the rapid ramp of AMD Instinct GPU shipments and strong sales of 4th Gen AMD EPYC CPUs.

Client Segment: The Client segment also performed well, with revenue reaching $1.5 billion, a 49% increase year-over-year and a 9% increase sequentially. This growth was mainly driven by strong sales of AMD Ryzen processors.

Gaming Segment: The Gaming segment saw a decline, with revenue of $648 million, down 59% year-over-year and 30% sequentially. This decrease was primarily due to a reduction in semi-custom revenue.

Embedded Segment: The Embedded segment reported revenue of $861 million, down 41% year-over-year but up 2% sequentially. The year-over-year decline was attributed to customers normalizing their inventory levels.

Expanding AI Solutions Portfolio

AMD has been actively expanding its AI solutions portfolio, unveiling new CPUs, GPUs, NPUs, and software offerings at Computex 2024. Highlights include:

  • AMD Instinct Accelerator Roadmap: AMD introduced an expanded roadmap for its Instinct accelerators, including the new AMD Instinct MI325X accelerator, which is expected to be available in Q4 2024. The next generation AMD CDNA™ 4 architecture, planned for 2025, is anticipated to deliver up to a 35x increase in AI inference performance compared to previous models.
  • Ryzen AI 300 Series Processors: AMD announced its third-generation AI processors for PCs, the Ryzen AI 300 Series, which offer industry-leading AI processing power. New devices powered by these processors have been unveiled by OEMs such as Acer, ASUS, HP, Lenovo, and MSI.
  • Ultra Accelerator Link Promoter Group: AMD, in collaboration with industry leaders, announced the Ultra Accelerator Link promoter group to advance open standards-based AI networking infrastructure systems using AMD Infinity Fabric™ technology.
  • Cloud Offerings: Cloud providers, including Microsoft, showcased new offerings powered by AMD Instinct MI300X accelerators, highlighting the general availability of Azure ND MI300X V5 instances, which provide leading price/performance for GPT workloads.

Leadership in Enterprise and HPC Workloads

AMD continues to be the partner of choice for enterprise and high-performance computing (HPC) workloads. Key developments include:

  • 5th Gen EPYC Processors: AMD previewed its upcoming 5th Gen EPYC processors, codenamed “Turin,” which are powered by the new “Zen 5” core architecture and expected to be available in the second half of 2024.
  • Oracle’s HeatWave GenAI Solution: Oracle announced its HeatWave GenAI solution, powered by AMD EPYC CPUs, enabling enterprises to harness generative AI capabilities without requiring AI expertise.
  • EPYC 4004 Series Processors: AMD introduced the EPYC 4004 Series processors, designed to deliver enterprise-class features and performance for small and medium businesses.
  • Top500 Supercomputer Rankings: The Frontier supercomputer at Oak Ridge National Lab, powered by AMD EPYC CPUs and Instinct GPUs, retained its position as the fastest supercomputer in the world for the third consecutive year. Additionally, three new systems powered by AMD Instinct MI300A APUs were added to the list.

Innovations in Client and Graphics Offerings

AMD continues to innovate in the client and graphics segments, building on its extensive PC portfolio. Highlights include:

  • Ryzen 9000 Series Processors: AMD announced the new Ryzen 9000 Series processors based on the “Zen 5” architecture, offering leadership performance in gaming, productivity, and content creation.
  • Ryzen PRO 8040 and 8000 Series: AMD unveiled the Ryzen PRO 8040 Series and 8000 Series mobile and desktop processors, featuring advanced performance, manageability, and security for enterprise users.

Empowering Edge Computing and AI

AMD’s embedded solutions are driving computing and AI at the edge across various markets. Key examples include:

  • Sun Singapore’s Smart Parking Services: Sun Singapore is leveraging AMD Zynq™ UltraScale+™ MPSoC devices to power its AI-based smart parking services, enhancing video analytics and real-time inferencing.
  • Optiver’s Data Center Infrastructure: Optiver is utilizing a range of AMD high-performance compute engines to enhance trading performance and efficiency across over 100 financial markets.

Looking Ahead

AMD’s outlook for the third quarter of 2024 is optimistic. The company expects revenue to be approximately $6.7 billion, plus or minus $300 million, representing a year-over-year growth of around 16% and sequential growth of about 15%. Non-GAAP gross margin is anticipated to be approximately 53.5%.

As AMD continues to innovate and expand its market presence, its strong performance in Q2 2024 positions the company well for continued growth in the second half of the year. The company’s strategic investments in AI and leadership in data center solutions are expected to drive significant opportunities moving forward.
