Cryptocurrency Market Faces Pressure Amid Economic Data and Investor Sentiment
Bitcoin (BTC) faced a second consecutive day of decline as the new month and quarter began, driven by surging Treasury yields and a robust U.S. dollar. The flagship cryptocurrency dropped over 6% to $65,150.00, extending its two-day loss to approximately 7%, marking a retreat from its all-time high set on March 14.
Ether, following Bitcoin’s trajectory, registered a 4.5% decline to trade at $3,319.08. The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield reached its peak for the year, while the dollar, inversely correlated with Bitcoin, soared to its highest level in almost five months.
Market analysts attribute Bitcoin’s correction to a combination of factors, including stronger U.S. economic data and mounting concerns over inflation. Joel Kruger, a market strategist at LMAX Group, highlighted the repricing of Federal Reserve expectations, prompting increased demand for the dollar based on attractive yield differentials.
The downturn in Bitcoin’s price may have been exacerbated by significant selling activity, indicated by a whale transferring over 4,000 Bitcoin to the Bitfinex exchange. This coincided with a late-night drop in Bitcoin’s price and dragged down related stocks, including Crypto exchange Coinbase, software provider MicroStrategy, and mining stocks like Marathon Digital and Riot Platforms.
As April unfolds, the cryptocurrency market anticipates volatility, particularly among mining stocks, as investors eye the upcoming bitcoin halving event. Despite recent setbacks, Bitcoin remains up 53% for the year, signaling continued investor interest and potential for future rallies.
