Deal Creates the Industry’s First Vertically Integrated Full-Stack Quantum Computing Platform
IonQ (IONQ) has received final regulatory approval to complete its acquisition of SkyWater Technology (NASDAQ: SKYT), marking a major milestone in the company’s strategy to build a fully integrated quantum computing platform. The transaction, which is expected to close on July 31, 2026, combines IonQ’s quantum computing expertise with SkyWater’s position as the largest exclusively U.S.-based semiconductor foundry.
The acquisition is expected to significantly strengthen IonQ’s ability to design, manufacture, and scale future generations of quantum computers. By bringing semiconductor manufacturing in-house, the company aims to secure a domestic supply chain while accelerating the development of its chip-based quantum computing roadmap.
SkyWater will continue operating under its existing brand as a wholly owned subsidiary of IonQ and will maintain its role as a U.S.-based semiconductor foundry serving its broad customer base. The combined company is expected to support not only IonQ’s internal development efforts but also the broader quantum technology ecosystem through advanced manufacturing and development services.
The acquisition positions IonQ as the only vertically integrated, full-stack quantum platform company, giving it greater control over every stage of quantum computer development—from hardware design and semiconductor fabrication to software and cloud-based quantum services.
As governments and enterprises continue increasing investments in quantum technology, the transaction could provide IonQ with a competitive advantage by reducing supply chain dependence, improving manufacturing efficiency, and accelerating commercialization. Investors will now turn their attention to how quickly the company can integrate SkyWater’s operations and leverage the combined capabilities to expand its leadership position in the rapidly evolving quantum computing industry.
