AMD Earnings in Focus as AI Momentum Faces Semiconductor Market Volatility

Investors look to data center growth and new AI hardware as AMD prepares to report second-quarter results

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is set to report second-quarter earnings after the market closes, with investors closely watching whether the chipmaker can sustain its AI-driven momentum despite increased volatility across the semiconductor sector. While the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index has declined roughly 20% since mid-June following a year-long rally, AMD shares remain up an impressive 190% over the past 12 months, reflecting strong optimism surrounding the company’s AI strategy.

Wall Street expects AMD to report earnings of $1.62 per share on $11.3 billion in revenue, a significant improvement from $0.48 per share and $7.6 billion in revenue during the same quarter last year. Much of that growth is expected to come from the company’s data center business, where revenue is projected to exceed $6.5 billion, more than doubling from a year ago.

A key focus for investors will be AMD’s recently unveiled Helios AI platform, designed to compete directly with Nvidia’s next-generation AI server systems. CEO Lisa Su has highlighted Helios’ superior computing performance, greater memory capacity, and improved cost efficiency, positioning AMD to capture a larger share of the rapidly expanding AI infrastructure market.

Beyond AI, analysts will also monitor AMD’s client PC and gaming businesses. While PC revenue is expected to post modest growth, rising memory prices and a slowing PC market could pressure future demand. Overall, the earnings report will provide an important update on AMD’s ability to challenge Nvidia while capitalizing on the continued expansion of enterprise AI spending.
