Successful network integration brings direct satellite broadband, calls and messaging closer to Canadian smartphone users
TELUS and AST SpaceMobile (ASTS) have successfully completed their first integration test connecting TELUS’ wireless network with AST SpaceMobile’s space-based cellular network, marking an important step toward expanding direct-to-device satellite connectivity across Canada.
The test demonstrated progress toward enabling standard smartphones to access broadband data, voice calls and text messaging through satellites, without requiring specialized satellite phones or additional hardware.
AST SpaceMobile is developing a constellation of low Earth orbit satellites designed to provide cellular broadband directly to everyday mobile devices. Its satellites feature some of the largest commercial communications arrays deployed in low Earth orbit, allowing the network to complement existing terrestrial wireless infrastructure.
By integrating AST SpaceMobile’s satellite technology with TELUS’ wireless network, the companies aim to extend cellular connectivity into remote and underserved regions where traditional network coverage can be difficult or costly to deploy.
The technology could have particular importance in Canada, where vast geographic areas remain challenging for conventional cellular infrastructure. Expanded satellite coverage could also improve access to emergency communications for travelers and residents in remote locations.
The successful integration test represents another milestone for AST SpaceMobile as it works with telecommunications operators worldwide to build a global space-based cellular broadband network.
