E-Commerce Giant Beats Estimates, Plans Cloud and AI Expansion
Alibaba Group (BABA) saw its stock jump over 10% on Thursday after reporting strong fiscal third-quarter results that exceeded analyst expectations. The Chinese e-commerce giant posted an 8% year-over-year revenue increase to $38.38 billion, surpassing the consensus estimate of $38.19 billion. Adjusted earnings per ADS came in at $2.93, beating the expected $2.66, while adjusted net income rose 7% to $7 billion.
Segment Performance and Growth Drivers
Alibaba’s core domestic e-commerce businesses, Taobao and Tmall, saw revenue rise 5% to $18.64 billion, driven by growth in online gross merchandise value (GMV) and improved take rates. Its international digital commerce unit posted an impressive 32% revenue growth to $5.17 billion, fueled by strong cross-border business performance.
The company’s cloud division, Cloud Intelligence Group, continued to expand, with revenue rising 13% year over year to $4.35 billion, supported by double-digit growth in public cloud services, including AI-related products. Notably, Alibaba recently launched its first cloud region in Mexico, signaling its ambitions for global cloud expansion.
Local services revenue climbed 12% to $2.33 billion, driven by increased order volume on Amap and Ele.me, while its digital media and entertainment unit rose 8% to $745 million. However, Cainiao Smart Logistics Network revenue dipped 1% amid ongoing restructuring efforts.
Financial Strength and Future Investments
Alibaba remains financially robust, holding $83.58 billion in cash and equivalents as of December 31, 2024. Operating cash flow rose 10% year over year to $9.72 billion. However, free cash flow declined 31% to $5.35 billion due to increased cloud infrastructure investments.
Looking ahead, Alibaba expects its international e-commerce unit to turn profitable next fiscal year and plans to invest more in cloud and AI over the next three years than in the past decade. This aligns with its recent partnership with Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) to co-develop AI features for iPhones in China.
With Alibaba shares surging 72% over the past 12 months, the company continues to benefit from China’s economic stimulus measures and rising demand for affordable AI solutions.
