New data shows Waymo cutting fares as traditional ride-hailing gets more expensive, while Tesla looms as a disruptive wildcard
Rides in autonomous vehicles are still more expensive than traditional ride-hailing, but the price gap is narrowing, according to new data from pricing analytics firm Obi. The report, based on nearly 94,000 simulated ride requests in the San Francisco Bay Area, shows that Waymo robotaxi fares are declining while prices on Uber and Lyft have risen.
Between late November and January 1, Waymo rides averaged $19.69, compared with $17.47 for Uber and $15.47 for Lyft. While Waymo remains the most expensive option, the difference has shrunk meaningfully. In April 2025, Waymo rides averaged $20.43, while Uber and Lyft came in at $15.58 and $14.44, respectively. Since then, Waymo’s average price has dropped 3.6%, while Uber’s and Lyft’s have increased by 12% and 7%.
Obi CEO Ashwini Anburajan said the shift reflects two forces moving at once: Waymo is pricing more aggressively, particularly as the novelty of riding in a robotaxi fades, while traditional ride-hailing costs continue to climb. That dynamic suggests Waymo may need to stay competitive on price as autonomous rides become more familiar to consumers.
The report also highlights Tesla as a potential disruptor. Obi’s data shows Tesla rides are significantly cheaper than Waymo, Uber, or Lyft—but with important caveats. Tesla does not yet operate a fully driverless robotaxi service in California and relies on employee drivers using Full Self-Driving software. Its limited fleet has also led to the longest average wait times among surveyed services.
Despite these limitations, consumer interest is strong. In a survey of 2,000 respondents across four states, Tesla emerged as the second-most preferred autonomous brand behind Waymo, even though it has yet to scale true robotaxis. That brand pull hints at future demand if Tesla can expand its service.
With Waymo expanding into new cities, Uber and Lyft integrating more autonomous partners, and competitors like Zoox, Nuro, and Motional preparing launches, the robotaxi market is entering a more competitive phase. As pricing converges and options multiply, the battle for rider loyalty is just beginning.
