Autonomous partnership signals major step toward large-scale driverless mobility

Shares of Rivian Automotive (RIVN) surged more than 10% after the electric vehicle maker announced a landmark partnership with Uber Technologies (UBER) to deploy up to 50,000 fully autonomous robotaxis in the coming years.

Under the agreement, Uber and its fleet partners will initially purchase 10,000 Rivian R2 robotaxis, with the option to expand the order by an additional 40,000 vehicles by 2030. The deal includes up to $1.25 billion in funding from Uber, with an initial $300 million investment already committed, pending regulatory approval and the achievement of key autonomous driving milestones.

The rollout is expected to begin in San Francisco and Miami in 2028, with plans to expand to as many as 25 cities by 2031, marking a significant acceleration in the commercialization of autonomous ride-hailing services.

Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe emphasized the company’s vertically integrated approach, highlighting its in-house autonomy stack, data infrastructure, and advanced computing platform as key differentiators. Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi echoed that sentiment, noting confidence in Rivian’s ability to control the full vehicle and software ecosystem at scale.

The partnership is part of Uber’s broader push into autonomous mobility. The company has also collaborated with Nvidia to deploy Level 4 autonomous vehicles and has formed alliances with companies such as Lucid and Waymo to expand its robotaxi footprint across major U.S. cities.

For Rivian, the deal provides a substantial boost to its financial outlook. The guaranteed vehicle orders and capital investment offer increased visibility as the company ramps production of its upcoming R2 platform and works toward profitability.

As competition intensifies in the autonomous vehicle space, the Rivian-Uber partnership underscores a growing trend: strategic alliances between automakers and mobility platforms may be the fastest path to scaling robotaxi services and reshaping urban transportation.
