Bitcoin Reclaims $70K Amid Geopolitical Tensions and Market Short Squeeze

Crypto markets rally as ceasefire hopes and investor positioning drive volatility

Bitcoin (BTC) surged past the $70,000 mark on Monday for the first time since late March, reflecting a complex mix of geopolitical developments and market dynamics. The world’s largest cryptocurrency climbed more than 3.5%, briefly exceeding $70,200 before stabilizing just below that level in London trading. Ether followed suit, rising as much as 5.1%, signaling broader strength across digital assets.

The rally comes as investors react to reports that Iran may be pursuing a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict, even as U.S. President Donald Trump intensified rhetoric by threatening strikes on civilian infrastructure. The geopolitical backdrop has injected uncertainty into global markets, but it has also triggered sharp movements in crypto positioning. According to Coinglass data, approximately $273 million in bearish crypto bets were liquidated over the past 24 hours, fueling a short squeeze that contributed to Bitcoin’s upward momentum.

Market participants noted that many short positions were established over the weekend amid rising tensions. However, with reduced liquidity due to holidays in Europe and Asia, even modest shifts in positioning led to outsized price reactions. Analysts suggest Bitcoin is increasingly decoupling from traditional risk sentiment, behaving less like a macro hedge and more like a demand-driven asset.

Despite recent gains, Bitcoin remains range-bound between $65,000 and $75,000, well below its prior peak above $126,000. Still, resilience in institutional demand offers support. U.S.-listed spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $22.3 million in net inflows last week, underscoring continued investor interest.

As global markets balance geopolitical risks with shifting capital flows, Bitcoin’s latest rally highlights its evolving role in modern portfolios—less reactive to headlines, and more influenced by structural demand and market positioning.
