Cloud acceleration, advertising strength, and record revenue reinforce confidence in Amazon’s long-term AI strategy
Amazon (AMZN) impressed Wall Street with a standout second-quarter earnings report, fueled by rapid growth in its cloud computing business and continued momentum across its retail and advertising operations. The company reported revenue of $200.6 billion, a 20% increase from a year ago, comfortably beating analyst expectations. Earnings per share reached $5.75, significantly above forecasts, while operating income climbed 43% to $27.5 billion.
A major highlight was Amazon Web Services (AWS), which generated $42.2 billion in revenue, up 37% year over year—its fastest growth in more than four years. Strong demand for AI infrastructure and cloud services continues to drive AWS, with CEO Andy Jassy noting that the company’s AI and custom chip businesses have each surpassed $25 billion in annualized revenue.
Amazon also announced plans to increase its 2026 capital expenditures to $220 billion, underscoring its commitment to expanding AI infrastructure, robotics, semiconductors, and cloud capacity. Although free cash flow remained under pressure due to elevated spending, investors welcomed the aggressive investment strategy, sending Amazon shares sharply higher in after-hours trading.
Looking ahead, Amazon expects continued demand for AI services despite forecasting a more cautious third-quarter revenue outlook. Management believes its long-term investments will strengthen its competitive position as AI adoption accelerates across industries.
