Tier 1 Automotive Supplier Seeks Enhanced Efficiency and Safety in EV Contactors Through Ideal Power’s Solid-State Solution

Ideal Power (Nasdaq: IPWR), a leader in the design and commercialization of advanced power switches, has made a significant stride in the electric vehicle (EV) sector by securing a major global Tier 1 automotive supplier as a customer. This NYSE-listed automotive supplier, known for providing critical components to prominent automotive OEMs, has ordered Ideal Power’s proprietary B-TRAN semiconductor power switch. The deal represents a significant addition to Ideal Power’s expanding portfolio of Tier 1 clients targeting the fast-growing EV market.

Expanding Presence in EV Sector with B-TRAN Technology

Ideal Power’s B-TRAN (Bidirectional Bipolar Junction Transistor) technology is known for its bidirectional power switching capabilities, providing highly efficient and reliable solutions for EV applications. Unlike conventional semiconductor switches, B-TRAN offers substantial energy savings and lower operational costs, appealing to automotive companies focused on improving performance and safety in EV systems.

This new partnership follows Ideal Power’s successful collaboration with Stellantis and serves as a testament to the growing demand for B-TRAN in the EV sector. Ideal Power’s President and CEO, Dan Brdar, underscored the importance of the partnership, highlighting the company’s commitment to leveraging its unique technology to attract additional Tier 1 automotive suppliers and OEMs. “We are pleased to see another global Tier 1 automotive supplier securing B-TRAN products as part of their desire to bring lower cost, more efficient semiconductor solutions to their numerous automotive OEM customers,” Brdar noted.

Product Orders Reflect High Demand for Advanced EV Solutions

Through ongoing discussions and meetings with Ideal Power, the new Tier 1 automotive supplier has ordered several products, including discrete B-TRAN devices, a SymCool power module, a solid-state circuit breaker evaluation board, and a driver. The supplier aims to incorporate B-TRAN technology into solid-state contactors for EV applications, emphasizing the desire for innovative and more efficient EV solutions.

Contactors serve as cutoff switches in EVs, isolating key high-voltage components, such as batteries and onboard chargers, during maintenance or in the event of a collision. These components are crucial to the safety and operational reliability of electric vehicles, which require instant disconnection to prevent further damage. Typical EVs contain between four and six high-power contactors, making them essential in vehicle design.

With the high-power EV contactor market projected to exceed $3.7 billion by 2025, the demand for advanced solutions is expected to grow. Ideal Power’s B-TRAN technology aims to capture this opportunity by offering significant advantages over traditional electromechanical contactors.

Solid-State Contactors: Advantages in Safety, Efficiency, and Cost

Solid-state contactors, enabled by B-TRAN, offer multiple benefits compared to electromechanical alternatives. One of the most notable advantages is the speed of operation; solid-state contactors act instantaneously, eliminating arcing that can occur with electromechanical contacts. This improvement enhances both safety and durability, as solid-state contactors lack physical contacts that would otherwise wear down over time.

In addition to operational efficiency, solid-state contactors introduce customizable features, such as programmable trip settings and current limits, as well as built-in diagnostics to prevent unexpected issues. The potential cost benefits also make solid-state technology an attractive option for automakers. B-TRAN-based solutions are expected to be more affordable for large-scale deployment, which could make EV production more cost-effective while enhancing performance.

Growing Potential for Solid-State Technology in the EV Market

Ideal Power’s focus on the EV sector aligns with industry predictions that solid-state contactors could soon displace a significant share of the current electromechanical contactor market, possibly capturing half or more of this multibillion-dollar segment. As EV adoption continues to rise, so too will the need for advanced, reliable components that can support the increased demand for vehicle safety, efficiency, and lower costs.

Brdar remains optimistic about the potential for Ideal Power’s technology to disrupt traditional contactor solutions. “We are working to advance other Tier 1 auto suppliers in our sales pipeline to orders and then to custom development agreements and/or design wins,” he said, emphasizing Ideal Power’s commitment to strengthening its market position.

With the new Tier 1 automotive supplier onboard, Ideal Power is poised to deepen its influence in the EV market by delivering next-generation power switch solutions. By targeting high-growth sectors like EVs with its B-TRAN technology, Ideal Power aims to establish itself as a leader in solid-state innovations and become an integral part of the automotive industry’s shift toward electrification.
