MP Materials and USA Rare Earth rally more than 20% amid fresh export restrictions and tariff threats
U.S. rare earth mineral producers MP Materials (MP) and USA Rare Earth extended their rally Monday as mounting trade tensions with China rattled global supply chains. Shares of both companies surged more than 20% in afternoon trading, continuing a sharp upward trend fueled by geopolitical uncertainty.
The latest spike follows a move by Chinese regulators last week to tighten control over exports involving rare earth technology. Under the new rules, any products deriving 0.1% or more of their value from rare earth technologies now require government approval before export. China, which controls around 70% of the world’s rare earth production, justified the restrictions on national security grounds.
Rare earth elements—such as neodymium, praseodymium, and dysprosium—play a critical role in electric vehicles, wind turbines, semiconductors, fighter jets, and missile systems. With global industries heavily reliant on Chinese supplies, the new restrictions triggered fears of supply shortages and prompted investors to pile into U.S.-based suppliers.
The U.S. responded swiftly. Former President Donald Trump announced a 100% tariff on Chinese imports in retaliation, reigniting trade tensions between the world’s two largest economies. However, Trump later struck a more conciliatory tone in a Truth Social post, assuring followers, “Don’t worry about China, it will all be fine,” and suggesting President Xi Jinping “just had a bad moment.”
Despite the political theatrics, the market reaction was clear. Rare earth stocks soared as investors sought alternatives to Chinese supply chains. MP Materials, already one of the year’s top performers, has now climbed nearly 500% year-to-date, while USA Rare Earth has roughly tripled in value.
Monday’s rally highlights the growing strategic importance of rare earth independence in the United States. While short-term volatility is expected, investors appear increasingly focused on companies positioned to benefit from a long-term realignment of global supply chains.
