Strong Execution, Expanded Operations, and Innovation Drive Performance Milestones

United Airlines (UAL) has announced its fourth-quarter and full-year 2024 financial results, showcasing record-breaking achievements and reaffirming its trajectory toward sustained growth. The airline reported full-year pre-tax earnings of $4.2 billion, reflecting a pre-tax margin of 7.3%. Adjusted earnings were $4.6 billion with an adjusted pre-tax margin of 8.1%. Full-year diluted earnings per share reached $9.45, with adjusted EPS at $10.61, aligning with the upper range of the company’s 2024 guidance.

Strong Fourth-Quarter Performance

For Q4 2024, United delivered pre-tax earnings of $1.3 billion, a pre-tax margin of 8.9%, and net income of $1.0 billion. Operating revenue grew to $14.7 billion, a 7.8% increase year-over-year, with premium revenue up by 10% and Basic Economy revenue surging 20%. Notably, loyalty and cargo revenues grew by 12% and 30%, respectively.

Operational efficiency also marked the quarter, with a 6.2% capacity increase and a 1.6% rise in total revenue per available seat mile (TRASM). Enhanced customer satisfaction initiatives drove a 6% improvement in Net Promoter Scores year-over-year, with innovations like AI-driven solutions and in-app enhancements playing a key role.

Milestones and Strategic Initiatives

United achieved its highest annual passenger count, carrying 174 million customers and operating an average of 4,340 daily flights. The airline recorded top on-time departure rates at all seven U.S. hubs, thanks to investments in personnel, technology, and infrastructure.

The company also spearheaded advancements such as the integration of SpaceX’s Starlink Wi-Fi on over 1,000 aircraft and the launch of Kinective MediaSM, a personalized advertising platform. Sustainability remained a focus, with United being the first U.S. airline to use sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) at major airports and executing voluntary SAF operations globally.

Expanding Horizons

United made significant strides in global expansion, introducing nine new international destinations for 2025, including unique offerings in Greenland, Mongolia, and Senegal. The airline operated the largest international and domestic schedules in its history, with nearly 700 daily international flights and over 1.3 million domestic flights in 2024.

CEO’s Vision

“United’s innovative strategy post-COVID has redefined the industry,” said CEO Scott Kirby. “2024 was a year of transformation, and we are on track to achieve double-digit pre-tax margins, fueled by accelerating demand trends in 2025.”

Community and Workforce Impact

United demonstrated its commitment to community and employee engagement, with 64,000 volunteer hours and the donation of millions of miles and dollars to charitable causes. The airline also hired over 10,000 employees in 2024, while supporting initiatives such as relief supply transport and military shipment logistics.

Outlook

With robust demand forecasts and continued investments in infrastructure, technology, and global routes, United is poised for sustained growth. As the airline embarks on 2025, its record-breaking momentum underscores its leadership in the aviation industry.
