Chip Expansion, Pharma M&A, and Leadership Changes Drive Market Movers

Arm surges on data center ambitions, Merck strikes a major deal, and On Holding faces executive transition

A trio of corporate developments across technology, healthcare, and consumer sectors is driving notable stock movements, highlighting the diverse catalysts shaping today’s market.

Shares of Arm Holdings (ARM) are soaring after the company announced plans to begin selling its own data center chips. This strategic shift marks a significant evolution for Arm, which has historically focused on licensing its chip architecture rather than producing its own hardware. By entering the data center chip market directly, Arm is positioning itself to capitalize on the surging demand for high-performance computing driven by artificial intelligence and cloud infrastructure. Investors are viewing this move as a potential long-term revenue accelerator, placing Arm in more direct competition with established semiconductor players.

In the healthcare space, Merck & Co. (MRK) is making headlines with its agreement to acquire Terns Pharmaceuticals (TERN) for $6.7 billion. The acquisition underscores Merck’s ongoing strategy to expand its pipeline and diversify beyond its blockbuster treatments. Terns, known for its work in metabolic and liver diseases, offers Merck access to promising drug candidates that could drive future growth. The deal reflects continued consolidation in the biotech sector, as large pharmaceutical companies seek innovation through acquisitions.

Meanwhile, On Holding (ONON) is facing a leadership transition as CEO Martin Hoffmann announced he will step down in May. Leadership changes often introduce uncertainty for investors, particularly for high-growth consumer brands like On Holding. While the company has experienced strong momentum in the athletic footwear market, the upcoming transition raises questions about strategic continuity and future execution.

Together, these developments illustrate how innovation, strategic acquisitions, and leadership shifts can quickly influence market sentiment. From Arm’s bold expansion into chip manufacturing to Merck’s growth-driven acquisition and On Holding’s executive change, investors are closely monitoring how these moves will shape long-term performance across sectors.
