New funding and SPARK program aim to advance scientific discovery, national security, and next-generation innovation
Microsoft (MSFT) has announced a $60 million investment to support the U.S. Department of Energy’s Genesis Mission, a major initiative designed to accelerate scientific research through artificial intelligence. The program brings together all 17 Department of Energy national laboratories to collaborate on AI-powered research and development across critical scientific fields.
As part of the announcement, Microsoft also introduced SPARK, short for Scientific Partnership Advancing Research and Knowledge. The new program will serve as a management office for the Genesis Mission, helping coordinate secure collaboration among participating laboratories, researchers, and institutions.
The investment includes $40 million in Azure cloud computing resources and AI credits to be distributed over the next three years. An additional $20 million will fund engineering, architecture, deployment, and technical support services to help researchers transform AI infrastructure into practical scientific solutions.
Microsoft said the partnership reflects a future in which artificial intelligence and quantum computing become essential tools for scientific discovery rather than simply supporting existing research. By providing advanced AI models, hyperscale computing, emerging quantum capabilities, and technical expertise, the company aims to help accelerate breakthroughs in energy, national security, and fundamental science.
The Genesis Mission represents a collaborative effort between government, academia, industry, and national laboratories, highlighting the growing role of AI in solving complex scientific challenges. Microsoft’s investment further strengthens its position as a leading provider of AI infrastructure for both commercial and public-sector innovation.
