Shares more than doubled after Moderna and Merck’s personalized mRNA cancer vaccine delivered a major Phase 3 melanoma victory, potentially opening a new chapter for the biotechnology company
Moderna (MRNA) shares delivered one of the market’s most dramatic moves Wednesday, soaring roughly 140% as investors reacted to a potentially transformational breakthrough in cancer treatment.
The catalyst was positive Phase 3 results for intismeran, Moderna’s personalized mRNA cancer vaccine developed alongside Merck’s blockbuster immunotherapy Keytruda. The study enrolled 1,137 patients with high-risk melanoma that had been surgically removed and successfully met its primary and secondary endpoints.
The announcement sent MRNA from Tuesday’s close of approximately $63 to well above $150 during Wednesday’s session, with shares climbing as much as 160% intraday.
The excitement extends beyond a single drug. The successful late-stage trial provides major validation for Moderna’s mRNA platform outside infectious diseases, an important development as the company attempts to reduce its dependence on COVID-19 vaccine revenue.
Analysts see significant commercial potential. The melanoma therapy could eventually generate billions of dollars in annual sales, while success could strengthen the case for using personalized mRNA treatments against additional cancers.
There are still important hurdles. The treatment has not yet received regulatory approval, additional data must be evaluated, and Moderna must demonstrate that personalized vaccines can be manufactured efficiently at commercial scale.
Still, Wednesday’s extraordinary price action reflects a fundamental shift in investor expectations. Moderna is increasingly being valued not simply as a COVID-era vaccine company, but as a biotechnology platform with the potential to play a major role in personalized cancer treatment.
If regulatory progress follows the clinical success, MRNA’s historic rally could represent the beginning of a much larger transformation.
