Deepening Collaboration to Boost Electric Air Taxi Production and Certification

Toyota Motor Corporation (TM) is making another significant move in the electric aviation sector by investing $500 million in Joby Aviation (JOBY), further cementing their long-standing partnership. This investment is aimed at accelerating the development, certification, and production of Joby’s cutting-edge electric air taxis, a key player in the growing urban air mobility (UAM) industry. With this latest contribution, Toyota’s total investment in Joby has surged to an impressive $894 million, giving the Japanese automaker a substantial 22% stake in the U.S.-based air taxi company.

The partnership between Toyota and Joby marks a significant milestone in the development of sustainable transportation, blending Toyota’s expertise in manufacturing with Joby’s innovative electric aircraft technology. As cities around the world grapple with congestion, air pollution, and the need for faster and cleaner urban transportation, the collaboration represents a step towards revolutionizing the future of air travel.

A Strong Partnership Years in the Making

Toyota’s relationship with Joby Aviation spans nearly seven years, during which both companies have made significant strides in advancing the electric air taxi concept. Joby’s CEO and founder, JoeBen Bevirt, emphasized the importance of Toyota’s role in their journey, stating, “Today’s investment builds on nearly seven years of collaboration between our companies. The knowledge and support shared by Toyota has been instrumental in Joby’s success, and we look forward to deepening our relationship as we deliver on our shared vision for the future of air travel.”

Toyota’s investment will be delivered in two equal tranches over the next year and will be used primarily to aid Joby’s certification process, which is essential to bringing its air taxis into commercial service. Additionally, the funds will help expand production capacity to meet anticipated demand. Toyota’s engineers are working hand-in-hand with Joby’s team at its California headquarters, transferring decades of automotive design and manufacturing expertise to aid in the production of these advanced aircraft.

Progress Towards Certification and Commercialization

Joby Aviation has made substantial progress towards getting its electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft certified for commercial use. The company has rolled out its third aircraft from the production line and is making headway with regulatory authorities to complete the rigorous five-stage certification process required for commercial air taxi services. In August, the company announced that it was working on the fourth of the five certifications needed from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), marking significant progress in what is often a complex and time-consuming regulatory process.

Once certified, Joby’s eVTOL aircraft will be capable of providing a quieter, zero-emissions alternative to traditional air travel, primarily aimed at short urban routes. These air taxis are designed to ease congestion in densely populated areas while offering fast, efficient transportation.

Toyota’s Role: More Than Just an Investor

In addition to providing financial support, Toyota is actively contributing its design and manufacturing knowledge to Joby’s operations. The long-term agreement signed last year between the two companies ensures that Toyota will supply key components, including powertrain elements, for Joby’s aircraft. This collaboration highlights the automaker’s commitment to helping Joby build reliable, scalable electric air taxis.

Toyota’s involvement goes beyond the usual investor relationship, as its engineers are directly engaged with Joby’s team, sharing insights and innovations from the automaker’s decades of experience in producing high-quality, efficient vehicles. This kind of collaboration is expected to accelerate the pace of production and ensure that the aircraft meet the stringent safety and performance standards required for certification.

The Future of Urban Air Mobility

The collaboration between Toyota and Joby comes at a time when the UAM sector is gaining momentum. As urban areas face mounting challenges related to traffic congestion and environmental concerns, electric air taxis could offer a sustainable and efficient solution. Cities around the world are exploring the potential of UAM to alleviate pressure on ground transportation networks, and companies like Joby, backed by industry giants like Toyota, are positioning themselves at the forefront of this emerging market.

Joby’s eVTOL aircraft promises to provide a cleaner, faster, and quieter alternative to traditional transportation, with the added benefit of reduced emissions. Toyota’s investment and expertise are expected to play a crucial role in bringing this vision to reality, helping to make electric air taxis a viable option for urban travel in the coming years.

Conclusion

Toyota’s increased investment in Joby Aviation underscores the automaker’s commitment to sustainable transportation and innovation. By combining its automotive manufacturing expertise with Joby’s pioneering electric air taxi technology, Toyota is not only investing in the future of mobility but also actively contributing to the development of a new mode of urban transportation. As Joby moves closer to completing its certification process and ramping up production, the partnership with Toyota is likely to accelerate the timeline for making electric air taxis a reality in cities around the world.
