Stargate Project to Bolster U.S. Leadership in AI with $500 Billion Data Center Initiative
Microsoft (MSFT) announced changes to its longstanding partnership with OpenAI following the launch of “Stargate,” a $500 billion AI joint venture involving OpenAI, Oracle (ORCL), and Japan’s SoftBank Group. The venture, unveiled at the White House with former President Donald Trump, aims to position the United States at the forefront of the global AI race, leveraging Nvidia (NVDA) chips to drive advancements.
Since 2019, Microsoft has maintained exclusive rights to build computing infrastructure for OpenAI. However, the tech giant revealed that it has approved OpenAI’s capacity expansion, allowing the ChatGPT creator to collaborate with Oracle and other partners. Despite this, Microsoft retains its exclusivity over OpenAI’s APIs, the primary way businesses access OpenAI services, ensuring Oracle cannot host this key revenue stream.
The Stargate joint venture, structured as a standalone entity, will feature equity stakes and governance roles for OpenAI, along with a separate board chaired by SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son. Additional investors include UAE-based MGX. Microsoft, Nvidia, and Arm will act as technology partners, though Microsoft is not an equity funder.
Microsoft emphasized that its core partnership with OpenAI remains intact through 2030. Key elements include revenue-sharing agreements, access to OpenAI’s intellectual property, and a recent Azure commitment to support OpenAI’s products and training initiatives.
This development underscores OpenAI’s expanding influence and the collaborative efforts needed to maintain U.S. dominance in artificial intelligence.
